SUMMARY:

Sprinkler Apprentices are responsible for assisting foreman and fitters in the installation of fire protection systems. Sprinkler Apprentices are also enrolled and making progress in the AFSA's Apprenticeship Program. Sprinkler Apprentices assist Sprinkler Fitters and Foreman installing fire suppression systems on new construction sites. Sprinkler Apprentices learn to install, cut, thread, bead, and groove sprinkler pipes, connectors, and sprinkler heads in accordance with NFPA code and local standards. Additionally, Sprinkler Apprentices learn to read blueprints, complete change orders, and perform safety duties as part of daily course of work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Distribute the piping and accessories from the truck to the designated material lay down area.
  2. Maintain and organize lay down areas.
  3. Clean-up job
  4. Clean-up tool
  5. Understand FLSA's Safety program, SDS book, Hazardous Communication Program, policies and procedures Toolbox talks are mandatory reading within the first week of employment. Helpers must know where all related safety documentation is at all times on each project.
  6. Sprinkler apprentices are expected to continually make progress in their fire protection education with tools provided by FLSA.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or GED preferred but not required; or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and write.

LICENSES and CERTIFICATIONS:

Valid driver's license and ability to pass a motor vehicle record check required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will frequently be required lift loads up to 50-pounds and occasionally lift or assist with lifting loads/weight in excess of 50-pounds; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent use of ladders or scaffolds with likely use of personal fall arrest systems is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

TRAINING: Sprinkler Apprentices must enter FLSA's 8000 hour apprenticeship training program within 6 months of hire date. The training program consists of monthly classes and On-The-Job training. Successful graduates become certified Sprinkler Fitter Journey Workers. FLSA's Sprinkler Apprentice program is a Department of Labor recognized apprenticeship. Successful graduates are awarded the Journey Worker "Fitter" classification.
