Primary Function

The SQL Database administrator will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of SQL Servers and databases within the organization. This role involves ensuring the security, integrity, and performance of the databases while collaborating with various stakeholders to meet business requirements. The SQL Database Administrator will also work proactively to secure and patch the environment, highlight potential problems, and devise processes and procedures to prevent downtime.

Responsibilities
  • Support A.O. Smith SQL servers and databases. Perform advanced troubleshooting as required
  • Expert-level knowledge of MS SQL Server
  • Serve as an escalation point for resolving SQL issues either with performance or operation
  • Support and monitor the enterprise SQL environment, resolve issues, and identify improvements
  • Perform proactive system monitoring
  • Develop and maintain system documentation
  • Perform regular capacity planning and usage trending
  • Perform regular system security reviews
Role Specific Responsibilities
  • Evaluate database requirements and recommend solutions to meet global business needs.
  • Ensure database design meets performance, scalability, and availability requirements.
  • Database Maintenance and Optimization:
    • Backups, restores, and integrity checks
    • Monitor database performance
    • Optimize queries and indexes for improved efficiency
    • Troubleshoot and resolve database issues in a timely manner
  • Security and Compliance:
    • Implement and maintain database security policies
    • Implement and maintain an annual database maintenance plan
    • Ensure compliance with industry best practices
    • Perform regular security audits and address any vulnerabilities or risks
  • Disaster Recovery and High Availability
    • Maintain our high availability cluster
    • Ensure replication is operational
  • Monitoring and reporting
    • Utilize A. O. Smith monitoring tools to track performance and proactively alert on potential issues
    • Generate reports on database performance, usage, and capacity planning
  • Provide technical guidance, assistance and mentorship to other System Engineers and System Administrators
Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICIATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information systems, computer science, or related field, or equivalent experience and certifications
  • 5+ years of SQL experience in an enterprise environment
  • Experience with Oracle databases
  • Knowledge of IT security principles

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced troubleshooting skills
  • Experience automating tasks
  • Experience with patch management products
  • Experience with PeopleSoft
  • Must be able to handle a wide work variety and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • ITIL certification is preferred
  • Windows / AWS / Azure certification desirable
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and employees.
  • Ability to work with a globally dispersed team
Education
Baccalaureate in Information Technology Management or Computer Science
Years of Experience
Minimum of 5 years related work experience
