Mott MacDonald is a leading provider of dam and river engineering services with a growing portfolio of projects worldwide. Dam engineering has been a fundamental part of our business since the 1920s when we designed and delivered one of the biggest projects of its day, the heightening of the Aswan dam in Egypt. Throughout our history we have been engaged in the design, construction and maintenance of dams and barrages, from diversion weirs to hydropower dams - as well as associated river engineering, tunnels and power plants - and have delivered reservoir and hydropower projects in 45 countries worldwide. We have a strong global professional practice network made up of engineers and specialists experienced in dams, irrigation, potable and industrial water supply schemes, hydroelectric generation, mining, flood control and groundwater recharge schemes.

Mott MacDonald is actively growing its dams and levees practice in North America. We are currentlyseeking a Principal Dams Engineer or Project Manger for our West USA region. If sufficiently qualified, the role has the opportunity to grow into a portfolio leadership position. The role will be based at one of our offices in the California Bay Area, but we will also consider candidates in other Mott MacDonald US locations.

You will be responsible for leading opportunities and the execution of dams related projects in our water and energy sectors. The position offers great potential for professional growth and the opportunity to collaborate with our water resources, geotechnical, energy and structural professionals on dam and levee-related projects. The qualified candidate must have strong leadership and project management experience and direct business development experience during their career, with the ability to generate project leads, build client relationships, win work, and oversee project execution.

Mott MacDonald has unique on-going projects in design and management of dam and hydropower facilities. We currently are working on a number of pumped storage facilities to provide clean energy supporting the energy transition. Our services include preliminary design related to embankment dams, tunneling operations, mechanical components for power generation and many other aspects. We also are program manager for Valley Water's Pacheco Reservoir Expansion Project, coordinating engineering and environmental studies, investigations, and design. We are also providing technical reviews of all aspects of the dam facility, including the embankment, spillway, outlet works, water conveyance, stream restoration, and site access. These projects highlight Mott MacDonald's local dam practice and the exciting, challenging, and important projects we consistently work on.

This position requires direct interaction with clients and the ability to manage and mentor Mott MacDonald professionals. The role will require management of design teams comprising Mott MacDonald's supporting technical disciplines including water resources, geotechnical, environmental, risk management, structural and permitting services; and, specialty sub-consultants.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Interacting with clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Client contact, business development, identifying and generating project opportunities.
  • Executing project management duties including managing and tracking budgets, invoicing, and assessing staffing requirements.
  • Preparing technical and cost proposals.
  • Providing leadership/mentoring to technical staff.
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with team members, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Management of projects that may include:
  • Dam and/or levee safety inspections including structures within the purview of the DSOD, National Dam Safety Act and FERC regulations,
  • Data analysis, organization, and interpretation in support of dam/levee design, inspection, evaluation and rehabilitation projects,
  • Geotechnical investigations and analysis including seepage, stability, seismic, and liquefaction.
  • Structural investigations and condition assessments,
  • Hydraulic and water impoundment and flood routing analysis and spillway modelling and design,
  • Preparation of written reports and permit applications, including permit applications and coordination with federal, state and local water agencies.
  • Preparation of construction documents, plans and technical specifications, and
  • Preparation of project schedules, quantity estimates and costing.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel will be required.

We invite applications from candidates with the following qualifications and experience:

  • BS in Civil Engineering is required. Master's Degree or PhD is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer licensed (CA preferred) with the ability to obtain a professional engineering license in other states, as required.
  • An ideal candidate will have at least 15 years of experience directly related to the performance/management of the tasks described above. Ability to manage and guide project teams is required.
  • Direct experience working on projects that involve the Division of Safety of Dams (DSOD) of the California Department of Water Resources and permits related to the construction and certification of jurisdiction dams is highly preferred.
  • Experience working with national regulatory agencies including USBR, USACE, and FERC. Approved FERC Part 12D Independent Consultant is a plus.
  • Proven experience with the development and coordination of technical work products including but not limited to design and inspection reports, permit applications, and construction design documents.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to speak publicly.
  • Solid project financial management skills; knowledge of production support systems and personal computer proficiency are all required competencies.
  • Experience in providing technical and project leadership to early career professionals and project engineers.

Salary Range:$200k-230k
